AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Women's Cross Country team landed seven student-athletes on the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 First Team, the league announced. The Longhorns' seven First Team selections tie for the second most in program-history and are the most since 2004 (nine selections).
The Longhorns were led by junior Megan Vasquez who was one of three Big 12 harriers to post a perfect 4.0 GPA (Kinesiology) this year. Junior Jessica Heath (Business/Accounting) picked up her second First Team selection in as many years while senior Lauren Salisbury (Advertising) earned First Team honors for the first time after being named to the Second Team in 2007.
Garnering their first selection to the Academic All-Big 12 First Team were sophomores Mia Behm (Liberal Arts), Anne Jones (Natural Sciences), Ginny Simon (Education) and senior Asia Myrland (Psychology).
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or over the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of the team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
The Longhorns head to Columbia, Mo. this Saturday, Oct. 31, for the 2009 Big 12 Cross Country Championship. Missouri will host the meet with the women's 6K starting at 11 a.m. Central.
