SAN MARCOS, Texas -- The University of Texas women's cross country team placed seven of its 10 runners in the top 10 to win its fourth-straight team title at the Texas State Invitational in San Marcos, Saturday morning.
Texas, under the direction of assistant coach Stephen Sisson, tallied 23 points to successfully defend its title at the annual race for the fourth consecutive season. UTSA brought in 43 points for second followed by host Texas State with 100 points.
The Horns were led by senior Larkin Geyer who finished in 17 minutes and 47 seconds for a second-place effort. The Austin, Texas native clocked in just 15 seconds after UTSA's Dana Mecke, who ran at a 5:50 pace to finish in 17:30.5.
UT freshman Laleh Mojtabaeezamani recorded the Horns' second-best effort with her third place time of 17:54.1. Mojtabaeezamani was one of four Texas newcomers to place in the top 10. Freshman Julie Amthor was the fifth runner to complete the 3-mile race, clocking in at 18:08.8.
The next five runners to cross the finish line were all wearing burnt orange. Junior Lauren Kern came in sixth (18.:11.1) followed by freshman Mia Behm (18:16.6), junior Allison Mendez (18:23.6), sophomore Jessica Heath (18:27.9) and freshman Ginny Simon (18:30.1).
Rounding out the Longhorn contingent were freshman Anne Jones and sophomore Megan Vasquez who finished 15th (19:28.2) and 26th (20:10.7), respectively.
Up next for the Horns is the Texas A&M Invitational in College Station on September 13.
