No. 6 seed USC sweeps Wichita State, 3-0, in NCAA Austin Regional semifinal

AUSTIN, Texas - Freshman outside hitter Samantha Bricio led the No. 6 seed USC Trojans with 13 kills in their 3-0 sweep (25-20, 25-19, 25-17) over the Wichita State Shockers in the NCAA Austin Regional semifinal Friday. The match marked the Shockers' first-ever appearance in the round of 16 of the NCAA Division I Women's Volleyball Tournament.
Bricio, who recorded 13 kills while hitting .323 (13-3-31), also contributed two service aces, eight digs and two blocks. Senior opposite hitter Katie Fuller earned 11 kills and four digs, while sophomore setter Hayley Crone registered 39 assists for USC (30-5).
Wichita State (24-10) was led by freshman outside hitter Ashlyn Driskill with seven kills and one block, as well as junior setter Elizabeth Field with 22 assists, two kills, five digs and one block.
Set one was an early battle until USC seized control with a 5-1 run to make the score 15-12. Later, three straight for the Shockers, including a kill followed by a service ace from Ashley Andrade, who had four kills in the set, tied the score again at 19. The Trojans answered with five straight for set point position. Fuller recorded five kills in the set for USC.
The Trojans opened set two with five unanswered points, highlighted by a service ace from Sara Shaw and a kill from Bricio, for a lead the Shockers would not be able to overcome. The third began with considerably more balance and featured six tied scores early. However, up 11-9, the Trojans earned a 6-1 run for a seven-point margin. The Trojans closed out the match with three straight, including a service ace from Alexis Olgard and a kill from Fuller for match point.
USC will take on the winner of Texas vs. Florida Saturday evening (Dec. 8) at Gregory Gym in the regional final. The game will begin at 8 p.m. CT and will be broadcast on ESPNU.
