Volleyball earns No. 1 seed in NCAA Tournament

AUSTIN, Texas -- The third-ranked Texas volleyball team will make its 25th NCAA Tournament appearance this coming weekend when it hosts the first and second rounds of the 2008 NCAA Tournament at Gregory Gym.
Texas (25-3, 18-2 Big 12) earned the No. 3 seed in the tournament and the No. 1 seed in the Austin Regional. The Horns will welcome Rice, ninth-ranked Wichita State and UT's first-round opponent, Lamar to Gregory Gym on Friday and Saturday, Dec. 5-6 as the Horns host for the fifth straight season.

Wichita State will face Rice on Friday at 4:30 p.m. and the Longhorns will take on Lamar at 6:30 p.m. or 30 minutes after the conclusion of the first match. The winners of the two matches will meet on Saturday at 4:30 p.m.

Tickets to the NCAA Tournament first and second rounds can be purchased at any Texas Box Office location beginning Monday, Dec. 1 at 9 a.m. (Central). All-session ticket packages are $6 (students), $12 (reserved general admission) and $18 (reserved seating). Individual session tickets will go on sale beginning Friday.

The winner of the Austin Sub-Regional will advance to the Austin Regional, where it will face the winner of the Los Angeles (UCLA) Sub-Regional in the NCAA "Sweet 16". Regional matches will be played Dec. 12-13.

Texas earned one of 33 at-large bids to the NCAA Tournament, and was one of four teams from the Big 12 Conference to earn an invite. UT, which tied for the league title with Nebraska is joined by the fourth-seeded Huskers, Kansas State and Iowa State in the 64-team draw.

The Longhorns have won 13-of14 matches on their home floor this season and they have won 28 of their last 29 matches at Gregory.

Lamar (17-11, 12-4 Southland) earned an automatic bid to the tournament after winning the Southland Conference championship. Wichita State (29-1, 18-0 Missouri Valley) gained an at-large bid to the tournament after winning the regular season Missouri Valley crown. Rice (23-7, 12-4 Conference USA) earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament after finishing third in its conference.


 

 

In 2007, Texas earned its fourth straight bid to the NCAA Tournament and advanced to Regional finals for second consecutive season.

Texas has been selected to host first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament 19 times and UT is 38-9 all-time in NCAA matches played in Austin. Texas is undefeated in first-round contests at 24-0.

Single day tickets won't be available until Friday, Dec. 5 at 9 a.m. (Central).  These tickets can be purchased either online, by phone or in person.

Tickets will only be available at will call for this event.  Tickets can be picked up at Bellmont Hall beginning Tuesday, Dec. 2.  They will be at Bellmont until one hour prior to the event start time.  At that time, they will be available at will call at Gregory Gymnasium.
