Volleyball moves up to No. 6, Adams claims third Big 12 Player of the Week honor

Nov. 29, 2010

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Volleyball team has moved up to No. 6 in the latest AVCA Division I Coaches Top 25 Poll and Longhorns' junior middle blocker Rachael Adams has been named Big 12 Player of the Week for the third time this season after leading UT to wins over Texas A&M and No. 16 Iowa State last week. The award was the seventh player of the week honor for the Longhorns in 14 weeks this season.

The Longhorns move up two spots in the poll after spending two weeks at No. 8 and they earn their highest ranking since holding the fifth spot on Sept. 6.

Florida continues to hold the top spot, Stanford ranks second, Nebraska ranks third, California ranks fourth and Southern California weighs in at No. 5. NCAA Austin Sub-regional participant UCLA holds the No. 9 position in this week's poll.

Adams headlined No. 6 Texas' attack last week as it swept past Texas A&M and upended No. 16 Iowa State in a tough road test. The Cincinnati, Ohio, native averaged 4.50 points, 4.00 kills and 0.86 blocks per-set, while hitting at a team-best .571 clip. The junior committed just four attack errors on 42 total attempts for the week.

In Texas' 3-0 win over Texas A&M, Adams hammered out 15 kills on 19 swings and hit .737, while collecting three digs and adding two blocks and one solo block. She committed her lone attack error at the 23-22 mark in the final set. Against Iowa State, Adams anchored the Horns' middle as they knocked off the Cyclones, 3-1. Adams connected for 13 kills in the win and hit at a .435 clip. She added four blocks and two digs to her stat line.

Adams and her Texas teammates return to action on Friday, Dec. 3 when they play host to UTSA in the NCAA First Round. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. Central.
