No. 6 Volleyball earns six Big 12 honors, Faucette named Player of the Year

IRVING, Texas -- The sixth-ranked Texas Volleyball team earned a total of six Big 12 Conference awards, including two All-Big 12 First Team selections, Big 12 Player of the Year honors, co-Coach of the year lauds and two honorable mention nods, the conference announced Monday.

Senior All-America outside hitter Juliann Faucette has been selected the Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Year to become the second-straight Longhorn to receive the honor and the fourth overall. Head coach Jerritt Elliott was named Big 12 co-Coach of the Year, sharing the honor with Nebraska's John Cook. The award is the third of Elliott's career after winning coach of the year accolades in 2004 and 2007.

Texas (23-5, 18-2 Big 12) landed Faucette and junior middle blocker Rachael Adams on the All-Big 12 First Team, while senior middle blocker Jennifer Doris and junior outside hitter Amber Roberson were named honorable mention. Faucette is the only four-time All-Big 12 honoree on the 2010 squad and she along with Adams were unanimous selections.

The All-Big 12 awards are chosen by the league's head coaches, who are not allowed to vote for their own players.

Nebraska's Hannah Werth earned defensive player of the year honors, while Oklahoma's Sallie McLaurin won freshman of the year. Nebraska's Lauren Cook took home newcomer of the year honors and Iowa State's Ashley Mass was voted libero of the year for the third-straight season.

Faucette, the 2010 Preseason Big 12 Player of the Year, led the team with 3.88 kills per-set and ranked second on the club with 2.62 digs per-set. During Big 12 play, she ranked second in the league in points and third in kills per-set. The San Diego, Calif., native is hitting.261 on the year with a team-best 24 service aces and a club-leading 17 solo blocks. She has earned three Big 12 Player of the Week honors and earned her first AVCA National Player of the Week award on Nov. 23

 

 

Adams, a preseason All-Big 12 honoree, ranks No. 1 in the NCAA with her .436 hitting percentage and leads UT with 1.19 blocks per-set. The junior ranks third in the Big 12 with 1.24 blocks per-set in league action and she helped Texas to the nation's fourth-best hitting percentage (.304). The Cincinnati, Ohio, native ranks third on the team with 2.85 kills per-set and first with 117 total blocks.

Doris is enjoying a breakout season in 2010, ranking No. 3 in the NCAA statistics with her .427 hitting percentage and second among Longhorns. In 2010, she has recorded 83 total blocks 1.78 kills and 0.85 blocks per-set. During league action the Houston, Texas, native owns a .449 attack mark with 2.06 kills per-set.

Roberson is a talented six-rotation player who has been forced to play through injuries during her junior campaign. The San Antonio, Texas, native ranks second on the UT club and 10th in the Big 12 with 2.98 kills per-set and fourth among Longhorns with 1.88 digs per-set.

Elliott and his sixth-ranked Texas volleyball team return to action on Friday, Dec. 3 when they host first and second rounds of the 2010 NCAA Tournament at Gregory Gymnasium. UT will face UTSA in the first round on Friday at 6:30 p.m. immediately following the No. 9 UCLA/American first-round match at 4:30 p.m. Winners of the first-round matches will meet on Saturday, Dec. 4, at 6:30 p.m. for the right to advance to the NCAA Austin Regional next weekend.
