Eckerman sweeps Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week awards

AUSTIN, Texas - Texas freshman outside hitter Haley Eckerman has been named the Big 12 Player and Rookie of the Week after leading the Longhorns to wins over Texas A&M and Oklahoma last week to clinch the Big 12 title. The player of the week award is the second of her career and the rookie honor is her fifth of 2011. The national freshman of the year candidate averaged a team-best 4.29 kills, 5.36 points and 0.71 aces per-set, while hitting at a .347 clip for the week. At Texas A&M, Eckerman hammered out 18 kills on .455 hitting in UT's three-set victory. In the Horns' season finale victory over Oklahoma, Eckerman connected for 12 kills, notched a career-best five service aces and posted a career-high two solo blocks. Eckerman and her Texas teammates return to action on Friday, Dec. 2 when they play host to Texas State in the first round of the NCAA Championship. First serve is slated for 7 p.m. Central.
