Volleyball AirMail: Travel necessities
The Horns' recent mid-week trip to Colorado proved that certain things are absolutely necessary for today's collegiate student-athlete when they travel. After the UT volleyball team had to pare down the contents of their carry-on bags because of the length of the charter flight and Boulder's altitude, the Longhorns found out what they absolutely needed to survive on what turned out to be a four-hour trip from Austin. Below, each Longhorn noted what she (or he) needed to get by on the average road trip. (It should be noted that, for the most part, these necessities listed below made the trip to CU. However, for the players and staff that had to leave their favorite things behind, sleep became their prime time killer on the trip.) Brandy Magee: I need my music with me at all times, so I always have to have my iPod. I also usually have some fruity candy with me - mostly gummy worms - to satisfy my sweet tooth. I always have to have my lip gloss. And last but not least, I need my cell phone. The cell phone is key! Dariam Acevedo: I always have to have my books with me and my laptop so I can get some of my homework done. I also listen to my music on my laptop while I'm working. My phone is important, too, but if I don't have it, it's not a big deal. RuthAnn Feist: I need my books so I can finish up my homework on the flights. Jennifer Todd: I have to have my cell phone and my charger (I can't survive without it.), my iPod, hairspray and Tootsie Rolls. Lauren Paolini: Well, my iPod is a must and I bring my computer along as a backup, just in case my iPod dies. Also, I need to have my chapstick and cell phone. Oh yeah, and my homework so I don't fall behind. Jenny Andrew: I always bring Crystal Light packets because I hate drinking plain water. I also need my iPod, my laptop, my "gametime" lip gloss (because we all have lip gloss on before warm-ups) and maybe some books for homework if I have assignments due. I also try to remember to bring my journal that has some of my favorite pictures in it. Heather Schreiber: My iPod, my pillow and my cell phone are three things I almost always take on any trip. If I have a lot of work to get done, I'll also pack my books. Alyson Jennings: Well, I need my iPod for sure. Actually, I only need it when I can borrow my teammates' earphones because my dog chewed mine to pieces. My cell phone and books also come along, and I always have my camera with me, too. Michelle Moriarty: I always have my pillow and that's the only thing I really have to have on a trip. My cell phone is pretty important, too. I normally make sure I have some light make-up. I used to bring my laptop, but it broke. I also always have my school books. Leticia Armstrong: I always have a candy stash, which consists of chocolate and sour war heads. I have to have my tunes for the road - can't live without those - and my cell phones so I can talk to my mom and my little sister. Kiley Hall: I usually have a book that I will be having a quiz on soon, so it varies which one I have packed each trip. I have CDs, most of which are from special people back home in California. Then, if there is room left in my backpack, I'll have my chapstick, snacks and vitamins. But I will admit that, if I had to, I could live without any of it for a couple of days. Assistant Coach Tonya Johnson: I always travel with my iPod a good book, regardless if I'm with the team, recruiting or just traveling for fun. Assistant Coach Brian Hosfeld: I have my iPod, my noise-reducing headphones and a DVD player when my daughter, Ella, isn't traveling with it. Head Coach Jerritt Elliott: My phone, so I can hear my daughter Kahlee play songs on the piano. Videographer Jesse Sultzer: I always have my laptop, books and the video equipment. Athletic Trainer Kristin Thompson: I always have the medicine for the players who get airsick, books for do my homework, a CD my boyfriend made me, my cell phones and a sweatshirt in case I get cold on the plane. Of course, I also have my kit for tape and such. Media Relations Director Lizz Summers: I have my iPod, my laptop and my cell phone. I used to travel with a lot of movies for everyone to watch on the trip, but I stopped that this year because my bag got too heavy with them in there.
