Sance, Topic voted to Big 12 10th Anniversary Volleyball Team
DALLAS -- Former Longhorn All-Americans Demetria Sance and Mira Topic were voted to the Big 12 Conference Volleyball 10th Anniversary Team, the conference announced Tuesday. Sance and Topic were two of the seven former players selected to the squad, which was chosen by a combined media panel and online fan poll. All former All-Big 12 First Team selections were eligible for consideration.
Sance and Topic, both outside hitters, are joined on the honorary team by Colorado setter Kelly Campbell (1996-99), Nebraska setter Greichaly Cepero (1999-2002), Nebraska middle blocker Amber Holmquist (1999-2002), Nebraska right side hitter Nancy Metcalf (1997-99, 2001) and Texas A&M outside hitter Stacy Sykora (1995-98).
Sance, Texas' only four-time All-American, was a freshman at UT in the last year of the Southwest Conference in 1995 before she went on to star in the Big 12 upon its formation. Sance was the National Freshman of the Year in 1995 and a member of the 2000 U.S. Olympic Team. She graduated as Texas' all-time career leader in kills (2,013), attacks (4,783) and digs (1,614) and sixth in career hitting percentage (.304), the Horns' highest-ranking outside hitter.
Topic, was UT's only four-time All-Big 12 First Team selection, the Big 12 Freshman of the Year (2001), the Big 12 Player of the Year (2004) and was also selected as a freshman All-American before earning three more All-America selections. As a senior, she was a national player of the year candidate and led Texas back to the NCAA Sweet 16 before a loss to eventual national champion Stanford. In her senior year, Topic passed Sance on the UT career kills list and graduated as the leader (2,116), and finished second behind Sance in attacks (4,743) and fourth in digs (1,267).
Texas has won one Big 12 Conference championship (1997), and has finished second to Nebraska three different times (1996, 1998 and 2004). UT has an all-time Big 12 record of 134-60 (.691) entering Wednesday's match at No. 25 Colorado.
