In the midst of Breast Cancer Awareness Month, The University of Texas Athletics Department is proud to announce Horns for Hope--Texas Athletics' campaign to raise breast cancer awareness amongst the campus and community through Texas women's volleyball and basketball. The Horns for Hope campaign is highlighted by two events: Volley for the Cure and the Women's Basketball Coaches Association's (WBCA) Pink ZoneTM. On Oct. 29, Texas Volleyball will host Volley for the Cure in Gregory Gym on the UT Campus, as it squares off against Oklahoma in a Big 12 showdown at 6:30 p.m. In its first year, Volley for the Cure provides an opportunity for Texas Volleyball to raise breast cancer awareness through the education of the broadest possible audience on this special night. The Horns for Hope campaign will continue on Feb. 18 when women's basketball hosts both Oklahoma State and the 2009 WBCA Pink ZoneTM, formerly known as Think Pink, at the Frank Erwin Center. Pink Zone is coming off the success of last year's WBCA Think Pink-designated matchup against Baylor when more than 6,500 fans turned out to support the cause and watch the Horns defeat the then-No. 8 Lady Bears, 61-51. The Pink ZoneTM initiative is the WBCA's unified effort for coaches to assist in raising breast cancer awareness on the court, across campuses, in communities and beyond. In an effort to educate the largest crowds possible about breast cancer awareness and breast health initiatives, discounted tickets are available for both Horns for Hope events by calling the UT Athletics Events, Sales and Services office at 512-232-3865. Fans may purchase discounted tickets by mentioning the phrase "Volley for the Cure" to receive $3 tickets to the Oct. 29 volleyball match versus Oklahoma; and by mentioning the phrase "Pink Zone" to receive $5 tickets to the Feb. 18 women's basketball game versus Oklahoma State. The rise in the incidence of breast cancer is no secret -- one out of eight women has been or will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Horns for Hope looks to heighten awareness of facts like this and others to the UT campus and community. Fans can be a part of Horns for Hope by attending these events and wearing pink in support of the cause.
