Engle and Kocher garner Big 12 weekly honors

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas junior All-America opposite hitter Ashley Engle and freshman setter Michelle Kocher have been named the Big 12 Conference Player and Rookie of the Week, respectively, after leading the third-ranked Longhorns to a pair of conference wins last week. The honors mark the third straight week UT has claimed both awards, with Kocher winning the last three rookie awards.

Engle picks up the third player of the week award of her career after highlighting the UT offense in its victories over Baylor and Colorado last week. She averaged 4.79 points, 4.43 kills, 2.00 digs per-set for the week, while hitting at a .448 clip.

In the Horns' sweep of Baylor, Engle hammered out a season-best 16 kills on .536 hitting, committing just one attack error on 16 swings. She then tallied 15 kills on .367 hitting, while adding 10 digs in UT's win at Colorado.

Kocher paced the Longhorns' offense to a .375 attack mark last week, while registering 13.71 assists and 2.00 digs per-set in UT's victories. In Texas' 3-0 sweep of Baylor, Kocher led the Horns to a .446 hitting percentage and recorded 40 assists and six digs, while adding two kills on three swings. Kocher paced the Horns to a .329 team attack mark in their win over Colorado, totaling 56 assists, eight digs and a kill in the win.

Texas has now claimed four-of-seven Big 12 Player of the Week awards in 2008 and three-of-seven rookie of the week accolades.

The Longhorns return to action when they travel to Texas A&M on Wednesday, Oct. 15 for the State Farm Lone Star Showdown. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
