Topic earns third Big 12 Volleyball Player of the Week honor
DALLAS -- University of Texas senior outside hitter Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) earned Big 12 Volleyball player of the week (Oct. 4-10) honors for the third time in 2004 on Monday after leading the Longhorns to a 2-0 record last week. In two matches, Topic totaled 43 kills (7.17/game), 17 digs (2.83/game), 6.0 blocks (1.00/game), 46.5 points (7.75/game) and hit .352 on the week to pace Texas to victories at Texas Tech (Wednesday, Oct. 6) and at No. 16 Kansas State (Saturday, Oct. 9). At Texas Tech, Topic recorded a match-high 18 kills and added seven digs and two blocks while totaling 19 points for an average of 6.33 points per game. On Saturday, Topic tallied 25 kills against Kansas State, the highest three-game total in the Big 12 so far this season. She also posted 10 digs, two assists, four blocks, and 27.5 points (9.17 ppg) while hitting .538 for the match as Texas snapped Kansas State's 21-match home winning streak. Topic had her ninth double-double of the season in the match, as well. On the season, Topic leads the Big 12 conference in kills per game both overall (5.52) and in conference matches only (6.00). She is also ninth overall in hitting percentage (.354) and she has nine double-doubles in 15 matches and 40 for her career. The player of the week honor is the sixth of her career. Topic is a three-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree and a two-time All-American (third team in 2002 and honorable mention in 2003). Topic and the ninth-ranked Longhorns continue league action on Wednesday, Oct. 13, when they host Missouri at Gregory Gym for a 6:30 p.m. match.
