Topic grabs second Big 12 Player of the Week honor of 2004
DALLAS -- University of Texas senior outside hitter Mira Topic (Kastela Kambelovac, Croatia) earned Big 12 Volleyball player of the week (Sept. 27 - Oct. 3) honors for the second time in 2004 on Monday after leading the Longhorns to a 2-0 record last week. In two matches, Topic totaled 39 kills (5.57/game), 6 aces (0.86/game), 20 digs (2.86/game), 8.0 blocks (1.14/game), 49 points (7.00/game) and hit .271 on the week to pace Texas to victories over No. 5 Florida (on Wednesday, Sept. 29) and Big 12 rival Oklahoma (Saturday, Oct. 2) Against the Gators, Topic connected for a match-high 23 kills and 15 digs, and added match-highs in aces (five), blocks (seven), attacks (58) and points (31.5) as the Horns snapped the Gators' 46-match home winning streak. The double-double was her eighth of the season. With her first ace of the evening, Topic also outright claimed UT's career ace record with her first ace of the match. Against the Sooners, Topic had a match-high 16 kills and hit .407 in the match. She also added an ace, five digs and one block in the team's 3-0 victory while only two and a quarter games 2.25 games. On the season, Topic leads the Big 12 conference in kills per game both overall (5.29) and in conference matches only (5.59). She is also seventh overall in hitting percentage (.354) and 10th in digs (3.24). She has eight double-doubles in 13 matches and 39 for her career. The player of the week honor is the fifth of her career. Topic is a three-time first-team All-Big 12 honoree and a two-time All-American (third team in 2002 and honorable mention in 2003). The 11th-ranked Longhorns return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 6, when the team travels to Lubbock for a 7 p.m. match at Texas Tech.
