Sept. 12, 2011
AUSTIN, Texas - Texas senior middle blocker Rachael Adams has been named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after leading the 10th-ranked Longhorns defense in their two matches last week at the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic. The award is the first defensive player of the week honor of her career and her fourth Big 12 weekly accolade. The All-American averaged 1.80 blocks per-set in the Longhorns' matches with No. 7 Florida and No. 2 Penn State. Adams controlled the net for Texas and helped propel UT to its first win over Penn State since 1989. She now leads the Big 12 Conference in blocking with 1.75 blocks per-set in 2011. In Texas' five-set loss to Florida, Adams was stellar at the net, registering a career-best 10 block assists and equaling a career-best with 10 total blocks. She added nine kills and tallied 14 points in the match. Adams shined again in the Horns' 3-2 win over Penn State, recording a team-best eight total blocks (one solo block and seven block assists). She added nine kills and posted 13.5 points in the victory. Adams and her Texas teammates return to action on Friday, Sept. 16 when they play host to Santa Clara in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m. Central on Longhorn Network.
