Destinee Hooker featured in SI's Faces in the Crowd
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas dual sport athlete Destinee Hooker, a sophomore outside hitter on the volleyball squad and the reigning NCAA outdoor high jump champion, has earned a spot in Sports Illustrated's "Faces in the Crowd" feature in the magazine's September 11th issue. The 6-4 Hooker was honored after helping lead the No. 5 ranked Horns to a pair of victories at the season opening AVCA Volleyball Showcase tournament. At the Showcase, Hooker posted a season-high 23 kills on 57 swings en-route to leading the Longhorns to a 3-2 victory over defending national champion and third-ranked Washington. Hooker continued her hot streak in the Asics Classic and most recently in the Time Warner Cable Texas Invitational. She earned TWC Texas Invitational All-Tournament Team accolades last weekend (Sept. 7-8) after helping lead the Longhorns to a 3-0 victory over No. 4 Santa Clara. In game two of the tourney the Horns fell, 3-2 to No. 2 Penn State in a tough decision, but Hooker was impressive, posting 21 kills with a .308 hitting percentage. The freshman averaged 3.50 kills per game for the tournament and recorded 28 total kills. Hooker and her Texas teammates return to action Wednesday, Sept. 13 when they open up Big 12 Conference play at home against Texas Tech. The match will be televised on ESPNU and is set for a 6:30 p.m. first serve at UT's Gregory Gym.
