Hawaiian postcard with Sydney Yogi
Sept. 5, 2009
Aloha Horns fans, It's Sydney Yogi checking in from Hawaii to give you a recap of what we have been up to the last couple of days. We started the trip off with a trip to Rainbow Drive-In which is a local favorite here in Oahu. The girls were able to try some different types of food. Rachael (Adams) ventured out and tried the Loco Moco, but a lot of the girls enjoyed some shoyu chicken which is a specialty here in the islands. I think it was the best meal we have had here so far. The other days we have kept pretty busy with study hall hours, a little free time and just staying focused on volleyball. The girls have had some time to go to Waikiki Beach and check out the International Marketplace where they were able to pick up gifts for family and friends. The whole experience of sharing my hometown and the Hawaiian culture with my teammates has been fun. It is a little difficult down in Waikiki because it is so urbanized and not the true Hawaii. We have been able to eat some good local food, so I have gotten to share that aspect of Hawaiian culture with my teammates. Those hole-in-the-wall type spots are really fun to show them. I'm glad they are getting to see a different side to Hawaii. I have explained that this is the city, but that there are so many nice places around the island that are not so city-like. When we do have free time I have been taking advantage of the opportunity to hang out with my family and friends. One entire side of my family is here this week, so it is really fun to have all of them watching me play. It was a little different playing at UH as a Longhorn. When I was announced I was a little confused whether I should Hook'em or Shaka. The whole experience is different, but so exciting. I am really excited to play Hawaii and show all of the fans here what Texas Volleyball is all about. They have great fans that will applaud really good volleyball from any team. This afternoon I had a chance to go back to my alma mater, Punahou School. I did a video tour that will be coming to Longhorn Sports Center and TexasSports.com soon. Be on the look out for that as I show everyone a little piece of `my Hawaii.'
Stay tuned for more updates on the rest of our trip. A hui hou e malama pono (until next time), Sydney |
