Hawaiian postcard with Ashley Engle
Sept. 2, 2009
Aloha, Hey Longhorns fans it's Ashley Engle checking in from Honolulu, Hawaii. After a great opening weekend of play in Long Beach we are getting settled in Hawaii and seeing all of the beautiful things it has to offer. The Hawaiian culture is a great thing and everyone here has been very welcoming to all of us. When we arrived in Oahu we were greeted by Sydney Yogi's family at the airport and they along with members of the Hawaii Volleyball booster club gave all of us a pair of leis. They still smell wonderful and leave our rooms smelling fresh with flowers. We had a short team meeting upon arriving at our hotel in Waikiki and after getting changed we headed to the Outrigger Canoe Club for a little fun in the water and a nice sunset dinner. Following dinner we all went back to the hotel and had to keep ourselves awake until 10 p.m. to help adjust our bodies to the time change. After a good night's sleep we woke up bright and early and had a good breakfast that included fresh Hawaiian fruit. The team then had a few solid hours of study hall at the hotel to help keep us from falling too far behind on our studies as we travel. The team was cut loose around lunch for a little free time that allowed us to have some time at the beach and in the stores around Waikiki. We didn't spend too much time out and about because the focus of this trip is winning three volleyball matches. After a short amount of down time at the hotel we loaded up the vans for practice at Hawaii's Stan Sheriff Center. The team worked hard through a two-hour practice as we began to prepare for our first match in Hawaii against No. 10 California. Wish us luck this week as we take on three ranked opponents. Until next time. Hook'Em Ashley
