2009 Volleyball outlook: Middle blockers

Aug. 24, 2009

Head coach Jerritt Elliott’s 2009 UT Volleyball team is deep at every position, including middle blocker where it boasts a trio of talented middles that have the ability to dominate at the net. The Longhorns have three middle blockers – two veterans and one freshman – providing Texas with a versatile group of players in the front row. Review what the Horns’ middles did in 2008 and see what Elliott is saying about the trio.

RETURNERS
Rachael Adams
2008 Highlights

• ranked No. 3 recruit nationally by PrepVolleyball.com (2008)
• appeared in 25 matches (73 sets) and earned a start against Iowa State (9/24)
Elliott on Adams: “Rachael had a really good spring. She matured a lot and got a lot stronger and she is really starting to come into her own. Coming into the season she is the best blocking middle (blocker) on the team. She can score a lot of points in that area and with continued development she can become one of the premiere middle blockers in the country.”

Jennifer Doris
2008 Highlights

• Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week (11/24/08)
• 2008 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District 6 Second Team
• 2008 Academic All-Big 12 First Team
• ranked second among Texas starters with a .419 attack mark and led all Longhorns with 115 total blocks and 1.00 blocks per-set
• ranked eighth in the Big 12 in blocks per-set (1.00)
Elliott on Doris: “Jen Doris had a huge spring for us. We have seen a huge development in her strength and she has gone from the ability to be a role player to being able to take on a heavy load. I think she is one of our most improved players coming into the season, if not the most improved. A lot of tall middles transition well in between their sophomore and junior seasons. Jen is at that stage in her career and has shown signs of making the turn in much the same way Lauren Paolini did at that point in her career.”

FRESHMAN
Sha’Dare McNeal
Prep Highlights
• ranked No. 5 recruit nationally by PrepVolleyball.com (2009)
• member of the 2008 U.S. Women’s Junior National Team
• 2008 Volleyball Magazine Fab 50 recruit
• 2008 Under Armour High School All-American and honorable mention Mizuno/Volleyball All-American
Elliott on McNeal: “Sha’Dare is our most polished freshman coming into the season. She comes from a very solid club program and she has played a lot with USA Volleyball. Sha’Dare has played outside, middle and right side with her club team and she has very good volleyball IQ. She has improved leaps and bounds over the last year with her strength and maturity. Although she is a little undersized for a middle blocker she makes up for it with her great speed. Her ability to play in the middle as well as on both sides will be an asset for our team this year and in seasons to come.”
