Volleyball ranked No. 3 in CBS College Sports/AVCA Preseason poll
Aug. 19, 2008 LEXINGTON, Ky. -- Coming off of a 27-4 regular-season finish in 2007, the Texas Volleyball team enters the 2008 campaign ranked No. 3 in the CBS College Sports/American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Preseason Top 25 poll. Head coach Jerritt Elliott's Longhorns will face seven of the preseason Top 25 squads a total of 10 times this season. Texas joins three other Big 12 Conference teams -Nebraska, Kansas State, Iowa State - in the preseason Top 25. Penn State, the 2007 NCAA Champion, comes in at the top spot in the poll. Stanford ranks second after finishing as NCAA runner up in 2007, while USC ranks fourth and California weighs in at No. 5. Rounding out the Top 10 are No. 6 UCLA, No. 7 Nebraska, No. 8 Florida, No. 9 Washington and No. 10 Cal Poly. Texas and Nebraska are picked to finish one-two, respectively, in the 2008 Big 12 Preseason Coaches Poll, while No. 14 Kansas State is picked to finish third and No. 18 Iowa State is picked sixth. Texas will face seven of the AVCA Top 25 teams 10 times. UT opens the 2008 season on Friday, Aug. 29 against No. 4 USC before taking on No. 2 Stanford on Aug. 31 at the Runza/AVCA Showcase in Omaha, Neb. Texas will then travel to Las Cruces, N.M. to take on No. 23 New Mexico State at the New Mexico State Tournament. The Longhorns kick off Big 12 Conference play on Sept. 20 at No. 7 Nebraska before returning home to host No. 18 Iowa State. Texas hosts No. 14 Kansas State on Oct. 4 before repeating its conference slate against the Cornhuskers, Wildcats and Cyclones. The Horns other match against a ranked opponent is a non-conference showdown with No. 20 BYU on Oct. 24.
