Volleyball ranked No. 4 in AVCA Preseason Poll

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Texas Volleyball team has earned a No. 4 ranking in the AVCA Division I Coaches Preseason Poll. Texas has now appeared in the AVCA top 25 for 111 consecutive weeks and in the preseason top-four for five consecutive seasons. The Longhorns will face five teams in the Top 25 a total of eight times in 2011. Texas grabs the No. 4 spot after concluding its 2010 campaign ranked fourth in the poll. The Horns are coming off a 27-6 campaign that saw UT advance to the NCAA Semifinals for the third-straight season. Four-time defending NCAA Champion Penn State holds the No. 1 position, while 2010 NCAA Semifinalist Southern California ranks second and 2010 NCAA Finalist California ranks third. Penn State earned 54 of the 60 first-place votes, USC registered five and Cal garnered one. Rounding out the Top 10 are No. 5 Nebraska, No. 6 Stanford, No. 7 Washington, No. 8 Illinois, No. 9 Florida and No. 10 Hawaii. Texas will meet a ranked opponent in four of its non-conference matches, taking on No. 9 Florida, No. 12 Minnesota (twice) and either No. 1 Penn State or No. 6 Stanford at the Nike Big Four Volleyball Classic in Palo Alto. In league play the Horns meet No. 16 Oklahoma and No. 18 Iowa State twice each. The Horns kick off their 2011 calendar on Friday, Aug. 26 when they host Pepperdine, which finished one spot outside of the top 25, at the Burnt Orange Classic.
