AUSTIN, Texas -- After finishing 29-4 and making a trip to the NCAA Semifinals in 2008, the Texas Volleyball team enters the 2009 campaign ranked No. 2 in the Volleyball Magazine Preseason Top 20 poll. Head coach Jerritt Elliott's Longhorns will face six of the preseason Top 20 squads a total of eight times this season.

"A No. 2 ranking is a testament to where our program is at right now," Elliott said. "As coaches we understand that rankings don't mean anything. I think such a lofty ranking will help us work hard to attain the goals that this program is striving toward. The only time the rankings matter is if you are ranked No. 1 at the end of the season and we are going to prepare and put in the work now to reach that ultimate goal."

Penn State, the two-time defending NCAA Champion, comes in at the top spot in the poll. Nebraska ranks third after finishing as an NCAA Semifinalist in 2008, while Washington ranks fourth and 2008 NCAA Finalist Stanford weighs in at No. 5. Rounding out the Top 10 are No. 6 California, No. 7 Hawaii, No. 8 Minnesota, No. 9 Florida and No. 10 UCLA.

Texas will square off with No. 6 California, No. 7 Hawaii, No. 16 San Diego and No. 17 Saint Louis in non-conference action and in Big 12 play, the Longhorns will meet No. 3 Nebraska and No. 11 Iowa State twice each.

The Horns open the season on Saturday, Aug. 29 when they take on Long Beach State at the Long Beach State Baden Classic. Click here to view the entire schedule.
