Volleyball exes Busch Dodd and Moriarty compete at Manhattan Beach Open

AUSTIN, Texas - Former Texas Volleyball All-Americans Carrie Busch Dodd and Michelle Moriarty competed at the AVP Crocs Manhattan Beach Open last weekend. Busch Dodd took fifth place and Moriarty earned a spot in her first AVP event. In Manhattan Beach, the duo of Dodd and Dianne Shoemaker-DeNecochea won four straight matches to advance to the fifth round of the winner's bracket where they fell to Jenny Johnson Jordan and Annett Davis, 16-21, 21-18, 12-15. The loss moved them to the eighth round of the contender's bracket where they were tripped up by Priscilla Lima and Tatiana Minello, 21-18, 19-21, 13-15. Dodd and Shoemaker-DeNecochea's fifth-place finish was their ninth top-five finish in nine events this season. Moriarty teamed with partner Sydney Donahue at the event, qualifying after knocking off Casey McFarland and Lindsey Olson 18-21, 27-25, 15-7 in the qualifiers. In the first round, the tandem was defeated by Michelle More and Suzanne Stonebarger, 8-21, 16-21 before being eliminated by Dana Kabashima and Cindy Phillips, 14-21, 14-21. The next AVP event is the Crocs Slam Hermosa Beach Open on Aug. 6-8.
