Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship field announced

April 7, 2009

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Volleyball team has been invited to compete in the Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship in Riverside, Calif., for the third straight year. CBS College Sports Network, along with the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) and the AVP, are again teaming up to stage an elite showcase featuring the nation's top women's collegiate volleyball players.

The 2009 Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will be held in downtown Riverside, Calif. on Saturday, April 18, in conjunction with the AVP Crocs Tour Riverside Open. Play begins at 8:30 a.m. Pacific from downtown Riverside at 3300 Market St.

Texas will look to defend its 2008 team title and A-Flight title against Nebraska, Hawaii, USC, Utah, San Diego, North Carolina and UC Riverside will compete in the 2009 championship. The Championship is part of the fourth annual Collegiate Nationals, a first-of-its kind event that crowns national champions in 11 events.

The Longhorns' tandem of Ashley Engle and Kiley Hall claimed the A-flight championship at the 2008 championship, knocking off USC in the final. Eight members of the UT team competed in the tournament with all four of Texas' teams appearing in the finals of their respective flights. Texas totaled 14 points to claim the overall team championship, while San Diego tallied 11 points and finished second, Nebraska recorded eight points and placed third and USC registered four points and claimed fourth.

"The Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship has been at the forefront of the movement to add Sand Volleyball as an NCAA sport," said Kathy DeBoer, Executive Director, AVCA. "We anticipate the NCAA adding it to the Emerging Sports list for women next month, which would pave the way for colleges and universities to sponsor it as a varsity sport beginning with the 2010-2011 academic year."

Extensive television coverage of the Alt Games and beach volleyball championship kicks-off with a special one-hour program airing on CBS Sports on Saturday, May 16 at 1 p.m. Central.

The Collegiate Beach Volleyball Championship will adhere strictly to NCAA guidelines for college volleyball.
