Volleyball announces spring schedule

AUSTIN, Texas -- The Texas volleyball team, which finished the 2004 campaign ranked 11th after advancing to the NCAA Sweet 16 for the first time since 1998, will kick off its exhibition spring season Friday, March 25, when the team hosts a scrimmage against Wichita State at the UT Recreation Sports Center (7-10 a.m.).

On Saturday, April 9, the Horns will welcome seven other top programs to Gregory Gym for their first tournament of the spring. LSU, New Mexico State, Houston, TCU, Rice, North Texas and Texas A&M, who were ranked 20th in the final poll, will participate in the eight-team tournament that will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Gregory Gym. Matches will be played concurrently on three separate courts.

The following weekend, on Saturday, April 16, Texas will host its second tournament of the spring that will feature UT-San Antonio, Mississippi State and Texas State. The tournament will be played on two courts and will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Gregory Gym.

The final action of the year for the Longhorns will come in a full match Saturday, April 23 against UT-San Antonio. First serve is at 6 p.m. at Gregory Gym.

The 2005 squad returns nine letter winners and five regulars from last season's 26-5 Sweet 16 team. Several All-Big 12 performers will participate in the matches, including 2005 Newcomer of the Year Dariam Acevedo (Trujillo Alto, Puerto Rico), and Honorable Mention All-Big 12 performers Michelle Moriarty (Houston, Texas) and Brandy Magee (Mission Viejo, Calif).

RuthAnn Feist (Wallisville, Texas) will also see her first action of her UT career this spring after graduating from high school a semester early and enrolling at Texas in January.
