No. 18 Iowa State defeats No. 3 Volleyball in five sets

Nov. 24, 2012

AMES, Iowa - Andie Malloy scored a team-high 19 kills Saturday as the No. 18 Iowa State Cyclones defeated the No. 3 Texas Longhorns, 3-2 (23-25, 25-19, 25-21, 15-25, 15-13), in the regular-season finale for both teams. Iowa State (19-7, 13-3) snapped the Longhorns' 17-match win streak, dating back to Sept. 15, as Texas (23-4, 15-1) missed a chance to go undefeated in Big 12 play since the conference realignment in 1996. Texas already clinched the Big 12 title last week, its fifth in six years.

Junior All-America outside hitter Bailey Webster had a career night with 28 kills, topping her previous best of 17 (set three times). Webster hit .446 (28-3-56) to go with three digs and four blocks. Junior setter Hannah Allison also had a career night with 64 assists while senior Sha'Dare McNeal had the double-double with 11 kills and 22 digs. Sophomore outside hitter Haley Eckerman chipped in 18 kills and six digs while freshman Molly McCage had 10 kills.

Jamie Straube helped the Cyclones with 16 kills while hitting .406 as Alison Landwehr had 66 assists, four kills and nine digs. Victoria Hurtt had 13 kills while Mackenzie Bigbee and Tenisha Matlock had 12 kills apiece.

McCage snapped a 14-14 tie with a kill as the Longhorns scored three straight for the 17-14 lead in the first set. Trailing 21-18, Tenisha Matlock scored to start three straight as ISU tied it. McCage and Eckerman went back-to-back for the two-point lead before Hurtt and Bigbee terminated to tie it at 23-23. McCage was able to send one to the back corner as Webster hit the crosscourt shot as Texas took the first set.

Straube used two straight kills to start a 7-1 run midway in the second set as the Cyclones took the 16-12 lead. A UT service error and two straight hitting errors was part of four straight ISU points as Straube's kill would tie the match.

Iowa State jumped out to a big lead in the third set and had to hold off a late Texas rally. After leading 9-2 early, Eckerman scored six of her seven kills in the set to help the Longhorns get to within three at 14-11. McCage and McNeal stuffed an attempt to pull to one at 21-20, by the Cyclones responded with their own block as Hurtt would make it a 2-1 match lead with the set-winner.

The Longhorns led 17-9 in the fourth as Webster had all five kills in a late 5-1 run to send the match to the fifth. Straube broke a 4-4 tie with a kill as back-to-back hitting errors by UT gave ISU the 7-4 advantage. Two straight from Hurtt made it 11-6, but the Longhorns would answer with three straight points. Malloy made it 12-9 for ISU, but Webster scored back-to-back kills for the 12-11 margin. After Malloy tallied another kill, a lift called against the Cyclones and block from Khat Bell and McNeal tied it at 13-13. Malloy scored her final kill as Webster's attempt sailed long to seal the win for the Cyclones.

The 64-team bracket for the 2012 NCAA Women's Volleyball Tournament will be tomorrow at 3 p.m. Central Time on ESPNU. Texas will host the NCAA Austin Regional (December 7-8) in Gregory Gym with tickets available by going online at TexasSports.com or by calling (512) 471-3333.

Notes: The Longhorns' 17-match win streak was the fourth-longest since the 2004 season...Texas is 32-4 all-time against Iowa State with all four losses coming in Ames (UT is now 13-4 in Ames)...Hannah Allison's previous career best for assists was 61, set this year at Louisville on Oct. 8...Texas is now 3-2 this season in five-set matches...Texas is 9-4 this season against ranked opponents...tonight was just the second time in 24 matches that Texas has lost when posting more blocks than its opponents (6.0 to 3.5).
