Nov. 22, 2008
AUSTIN, Texas -- The fourth-ranked Texas Volleyball team used a 14-kill effort by sophomore All-America outside hitter Juliann Faucette to knock off Kansas, 3-0, Saturday night. The Longhorns' 25-18, 25-11, 27-25 victory moved UT to 23-3 on the season and 16-2 in the Big 12, while the Jayhawks dropped to 12-15 overall and 6-12 in league play.
The Jayhawks kept the tally tight to start the first set before Texas put together a 5-0 run fueled by two kills from junior All-America outside hitter Destinee Hooker to take a 15-8 lead. The Longhorns added to their lead when a 4-0 run highlighted by a kill and a block assist from senior All-America middle blocker Lauren Paolini put UT ahead, 24-12. Kansas rallied with a 6-0 run to close the margin to 24-18, but a kill by Paolini closed out the set, 25-18.
Texas opened the second set on an 8-1 run, taking advantage of three block assists by sophomore middle blocker Jennifer Doris to claim a seven-point edge. The Longhorns widened the margin to 10 (15-5) on a service ace by junior All-America opposite hitter Ashley Engle and maintained a 20-10 lead on a kill by Hooker. Texas closed out the frame on a 4-0 run, taking advantage of two KU attack errors to win the set, 25-11.
In the third stanza, Texas led early, but fell behind 13-12 on an Engle attack error. The Longhorns did not reclaim the advantage until an attack error by KU's Karina Garlington gave UT a 21-20 edge. The Jayhawks battled back to tie the set at 24, but kills by Hooker, Faucette and freshman setter Michelle Kocher helped the Horns close out frame with a 27-25 victory.
Faucette committed just one error on 23 swings, hit .565 and added six digs on the night. Paolini connected for 10 kills on 13 attacks, posted a .769 hitting percentage and notched her seventh error-free match in Big 12 play. Hooker chipped in nine kills, while Doris and Engle each added seven.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday, Nov. 26 when it travels to Columbia to take on Missouri. First serve is set for 6:30 p.m.
