No. 8 Texas Volleyball falls to No. 25 Oklahoma in five sets
Sept. 28, 2011
Freshman outside hitter Haley Eckerman headlined the Horns' attack in the loss, hammering out a career-best 20 kills and hitting .368. Senior All-America middle blocker Rachael Adams joined her in double digits with 14 kills, while freshman outside hitter Khat Bell posted a kill/dig double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Early in the first set Oklahoma used a 10-1 run to jump out to a commanding 18-10 lead that would prove insurmountable as the Sooners went on to clinch the set 25-16.
The Sooners grabbed a quick edge in the second and ballooned the margin to 17-12 before a 4-1 UT run paced by three Adams kills cut the lead to 18-16. OU responded with three straight points and closed out the frame 25-20 on a pair of kills by setter Brianne Barker.
In the third, Texas used two kills and a block by Bell to fuel a 7-1 run in the early going and grab an 11-4 lead. The Sooners rallied to close the gap to 17-13 before the Horns responded with a 5-1 run to push the lead to six and ultimately close out the frame, 25-17 on Eckerman's fourth kill of the set.
The fourth set saw five lead changes and 11 ties and was punctuated with a Bell kill that propelled UT to a 26-24 set win. After leading midway through the set, Texas allowed an 8-3 rally and fell behind 17-14. The Horns bounced back behind two kills from freshman middle blocker Madelyn Hutson to reclaim the edge and they did not relinquish the lead the rest of the way.
In the fifth and decisive set, OU's Suzy Boulavsky notched three quick kills to give the Sooners an 8-4 lead at the switch. Oklahoma used a pair of Carlee Roethlisberger/Morgan Reynolds blocks to extend the lead to 11-6 and took advantage of a block and a kill by Boulavsky down the stretch to clinch the set 15-9.
Texas returns to action on Sunday, Oct. 2 when it travels to No. 16 Iowa State. First serve is set for Noon Central on ESPNU.
