Oct. 26, 2012
AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas Women’s Track & Field head coach Beverly Kearney has been honored with the 2012 “Employee of the Year” award by the Austin Mayor’s Committee for People with Disabilities, the City of Austin announced this week. Kearney will receive the recognition on Monday, Oct. 29, at the committee’s 33rd annual awards program at the Crowne Plaza Austin Hotel. The committee presents awards annually to Austin employees with disabilities who serve as role models to others with disabilities, as well as to Austin businesses that have demonstrated positive employment practices. Kearney is one of two “Employee of the Year” honorees, joined by Ethel McHorse of Samsung. Monday’s awards program is part of Austin’s celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month. This year’s theme is “A Strong Workforce Is an Inclusive Workforce: What Can YOU Do?” “For the past 33 years the Mayor’s Committee’s awards programs have recognized Austin business leaders for their inclusive employment of workers with disabilities,” Committee Vice Chair Ron Lucey said. “Austin employers understand successful businesses must include a workforce that reflects the diversity of the Austin community which includes trained and motivated workers with disabilities ready to contribute to their company’s success.” The awards program keynote speaker is Jim Hanophy, Assistant Commissioner with the Texas Department of Assistive and Rehabilitative Services – Division for Rehabilitation Services, one of the Mayor’s Committee’s lead community partners for promoting the successful employment of people with disabilities.
The committee will also honor MicroAssist, Inc. (Small Employer of the Year); H-E-B Springdale Store #13 (Medium Employer of the Year); Celia Hughes, Executive Director VSA Texas (Martha Arbuckle Meritorious Award); Jordan Smith of the Austin Chronicle (Media Award); Wayne Sibson, Restaurateur (Entrepreneurship Award); and Melissa Graves of the Doubletree by Hilton Hotel Austin (Distinguished Service Award). |
