Women's Cross Country preview: Johnny Morris UH Invitational
Aug. 31, 2011
Meet Info
-Running for the Longhorns on Friday will be seniors Mia Behm, Ginny Simon, Julie Amthor and Anne Jones, junior Melissa Mahoney and redshirt junior Laleh Mojtabaeezamani, sophomores Marielle Hall, Megan Siebert, Jessica Harper, Jourdan Ellis and Brittany Marches and freshmen Connor Ward, Jenna Read, Rachel Gutknecht and Marissa Lee. -Texas hopes to continue the early-season success it has enjoyed throughout Sisson’s tenure as head coach. The Longhorns have taken home the team title in their season-opening meet for each of the last six years and won their first three meets in both 2009 and 2010. Last year, Texas scored a perfect 15 at both the Johnny Morris UH Invitational and the Ricardo Romo Classic before finishing first at the Concordia Invite with 37.
-The Longhorns look to build off their impressive 2010 campaign, which saw them reach the NCAA Championships as a team for the first time since 2003 and place 20th. With her 35th place individual finish, then-junior Mia Behm became the seventh Longhorn harrier to garner cross country All-America honors in the program’s history. Texas returns six of the seven athletes who competed at the Championships, including Behm, sophomores Marielle Hall, Megan Siebert and Sara Sutherland and senior Julie Amthor. -Texas also adds a strong class of freshmen to its roster featuring Ward (Flower Mound, Texas), who took home the 1600m title in 4:54 at the UIL State Championships this past spring. She will be joined by fellow Texas native Jenna Read, a former teammate of Sutherland at Highland Park High School. -Following Friday’s meet in Houston, the Longhorns will train through the month of September before returning home for the Grass Routes Grand Prix, which will take place in Austin on Friday, Sept. 30. |
