Texas to host 2012 NCAA Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Rounds

Aug. 16, 2011

INDIANAPOLIS -- The NCAA Division I Outdoor Track and Field West Preliminary Rounds will return to The University of Texas for the 2012 season, the NCAA announced Tuesday. The Longhorns also hosted the preliminary round competition in 2010 and hosted the 2004 national championship.

The meet, which will be May 24-26, 2012, will be held at Mike A. Myers Track & Soccer Stadium, home of the Texas Longhorns and site of the annual Texas Relays meet which sees over 5,000 athletes and 20,000 fans turn out yearly.

The University of North Florida will host the East preliminary round competition at Hodges Stadium. North Florida will serve as track and field hosts for the first time in NCAA championship history.

Qualifiers out of the west and east rounds will advance to the 2012 NCAA Outdoor Championships which will be held at Drake Stadium in Des Moines, Iowa, June 6-9.

"We received an increased number of quality bids by institutions and sports commissions," said Todd Patulski, chair of the NCAA Division I Men's and Women's Track and Field Committee and deputy athletics director at Baylor. "This is a significant event that brings a lot of track student-athletes, coaches and fans to a campus and community. Texas and North Florida are two of those quality sites that will provide first-class facilities, staff and a commitment to the event. We're confident this will be a tremendous year for the student-athletes, coaches and everyone involved."
