Richards-Ross advances to 200m final

Aug. 7, 2012

LONDON -- Sanya Richards-Ross ran a strong 200m semifinal race on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium to earn an automatic qualification to the event final in search of her second Olympic medal of the London Games.

Richards-Ross has yet to slow down since winning the gold medal in the 400m on Sunday.  Following her 22.30 200m performance today, Richards-Ross became the first runner, male or female, to reach the Olympic finals in both the 200m and 400m since Australia's Cathy Freeman accomplished the feat in 2000.

For the second-straight race, Richards-Ross moved on with the top overall qualifying time, continuing her bid for a second individual Olympic medal in London. Running in the third semifinal heat alongside Olympic 100m champion Shelly-Ann Fraser-Pryce, Richards-Ross passed Fraser-Pryce in the last 20 meters to secure the heat win.  Including her race to Olympic gold in the 400m, she has placed first in each of the five heats she has competed in during the 2012 Games.

Also competing in the 200m semifinals and racing in the first heat was rising junior Allison Peter of the U.S. Virgin Islands.  Peter qualified on Monday in a time of 23.00 in her first-round race and ran a 23.35 today for 23rd overall.

The 200m final will take place at 3 p.m. Central on Wednesday.
