GROSSETO, Italy -- University of Texas rising sophomore Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas/Red Oak) finished with a best throw of 51-2.75 (15.61m) in the prelims in the shot put to earn a spot in Saturday's final at the 10th IAAF World Junior Track and Field Championships on Friday, July 16, in Grosseto, Italy.
Carter was competing in the second of two qualifying flights in the women's shot. On her first of three attempts, Carter unleashed her best throw of 51-2.75 (15.61m) to finish fifth out of 12 competitors in her heat. Her mark tied for the sixth-best overall, along with Bulgaria's Radoslava Mavrodieva, heading into the finals. Carter fouled on her second attempt and posted a mark of 50-8.75 (15.46m) on her third toss.
In the first qualifying heat, Russia's Anna Avdeyeva recorded the best-qualifying mark on the day with a toss measuring 54-7.50 (16.65m). After four days of action at the championships, the U.S. leads the medal count standings with 11, including seven golds.
