HORNS LOOK TO EXTEND OUTDOOR SUCCESS ... UT's women's track and field team has claimed four outdoor NCAA titles (2005, 1999, 1998, 1986) and have finished in the top 10 in 15 of the last 17 years. The Longhorns are coming off of a second-place showing at the 2011 NCAA Indoor Championship where they earned 10 All-America honors from seven individuals.
COMPETING FOR THE HORNS ... A group of 12 Longhorns will compete in nine individual events, while the Horns will also field a 4x100m and 4x400m relay squad: 100m - Chalonda Goodman; 200m - Christy Udoh, Allison Peter, Chalonda Goodman; 400m - Briana Nelson, Kendra Chambers; 1,500m - Betzy Jimenez; 400m hurdles - Danielle Dowie; High Jump - Shanay Briscoe, Victoria Lucas, Beverly Owoyele; Long Jump - Chantel Malone; Triple Jump - Chantel Malone; Discus - Okwukwe Okolie.
200 METER TRIO ... At the west prelims, Texas advanced three Longhorns to the 200m semifinals to mark the first time since 1999 that three Horns will run in the event's semis at the national championships. Freshman Christy Udoh and Allison Peter and sophomore Chalonda Goodman will all be competing at their first NCAA Outdoor meet. Udoh owns a PR of 23.09 (ran at the west meet) while Peter and Goodman have season-bests of 23.22 and 23.23, respectively.
THREE ADVANCE IN HIGH JUMP ... Along with the 200m dash, Texas will also field three athletes in the high jump final at the national championship. Shanay Briscoe, the 2011 indoor runner-up, and Victoria Lucas, who finished sixth at indoors, will be joined by junior Beverly Owoyele, who's competing at the national meet for the first time in her career. Texas is no stranger to seeing three in the high jump competitions this year as the trio placed at the Big 12 Indoor and Outdoor Championships this season. The Longhorns are the only school with three athletes in the high jump this year.
GOODMAN DOUBLES UP... Just a year after two serious ankle injuries, sophomore Chalonda Goodman has found her way back in advancing to the NCAA semifinals in both the 100m and 200m. In addition, Goodman runs a leg of the Longhorns 4x100m relay. The Newnan, Ga., native owns season-bests of 11.54 in the 100m and 23.23 in the 200m. She is one of nine athletes in the 24 person field to be doubling up in both short sprints.
NCAA NEWBIES ... Out of Texas' 16 entries for the NCAA Championships, eight will be making their first career NCAA outdoor championship appearance. The group includes five freshman (Briscoe, Udoh, Peter, Nelson, Dowie), two sophomores (Chambers, Goodman) and one junior (Owoyele).
NELSON AND CHAMBERS HOLD DOWN 400m ... Freshman Briana Nelson and sophomore transfer Kendra Chambers will be looking to join an elite group of Texas quarter-milers this weekend at the national meet. Texas owns four 400m national titles, more than any other school in NCAA history. Chambers will run in heat one of the semis while Nelson will compete in heat three.
BRISCOE COMPLETES SWEEP ... With her 2011 Big 12 Outdoor High Jump Title, Shanay Briscoe became just the second freshman in Big 12 history to sweep the league's high jump crowns in the same year, joining former Longhorn Destinee Hooker (2006). Briscoe cleared 5-11.25 (1.81m) to lead a trio of Longhorns that finished 1-2-T3rd in the event. Texas has now won the last three outdoor crowns and has the most in league history with eight overall since the Big 12 started 15 years ago.
OKOLIE REACHING NEW DISTANCES ... A year ago, Okwukwe Okolie was seeded 36th in the discus at the west regional before recording at then-personal best of 167-8, to finish seventh overall and advance her to the national meet. This year, Okolie has posted discus marks over 170 feet four times with her personal-best standing at 175-0 (53.34m). The junior placed eighth at west meet this year and will compete in flight one at the finals at 3 p.m. CT on Wednesday, June 8.
