Women's Track and Field places five on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas Women's Track and Field placed five student-athletes on the 2009 Academic All-Big 12 Teams, announced by the league office Wednesday. The Longhorns landed four on the First Team and earned one Second Team selection.

Seniors Kelly Heinbaugh and Larkin Geyer, junior Lauren Salisbury and sophomore Chantel Malone were named to the league's First Team. Heinbaugh and Salisbury were repeat First Team selections from 2008 while Geyer was a 2007 First Team pick. The honor was the first career selection for Malone, who leads the team with a 3.75 GPA.

In addition, Junior Asia Myrland was named to the league's second team for the first Academic All-Big 12 honor of her three-year career on the Forty Acres.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's track & field academic all-league squad consisted 114 first team recipients and 32 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
