Women's Track and Field preview: Big 12 Championships

Longhorns head to Norman ... The University of Texas Women's Track and Field team heads to the 15th annual Big 12 Outdoor Track and Field Championships this Friday-Sunday, May 13-15 held at Oklahoma's John Jacobs Track Complex. The meet will be broadcast by FSN on a tape-delay basis. Bill Land (play-by-play), Carol Lewis (color) and Grant Boone (sideline) will have the call.
Horns no stranger to Big 12 Titles ... UT's women's track and field team owns six Big 12 Outdoor Championships titles, the most a by men's or women's Big 12 team since the inception of the league in 1996. Not only does the program have the most titles, but they also hold the record for the highest point total (188 pts, 2003) in the history of the league's outdoor championship - men's or women's.
At Last Year's Big 12 Meet ... at the 2010 outdoor league championship, the Longhorns posted a third-place finish behind individual titles from Chantel Malone and Victoria Lucas. Malone completed her sweep of the Big 12 long jump titles after having claimed the indoor crown a few months prior. Lucas kept the high jump title in Texas' name as she won her first conference title.
Bricoe Defending Title ... Freshman high jumper Shanay Briscoe enters the Big 12 Outdoor Championships defending her indoor title. Briscoe was victorious at the Big 12 Indoor Championships with a clearance of 5-11.50 (1.82m). She went on to finish second at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Briscoe has a season-best clearance of 6-1.25 (1.86m) at the Texas Relays.
Longhorns Relay shince at PENN ... The Longhorns produced many stellar performances at the 2011 Penn Relays highlighted by their 4x400m championship title. Texas has won a Penn Relays leading 10 mile-relay titles since the start of the annual meet. It marked the first time since 2003 that the Longhorns claimed the championship crown in the event.
Sutherland's 5k feat ... Freshman Sara Sutherland has been quick to make a name for herself during her first year at Texas. At the Penn Relays, Sutherland posted the second-fastest 5K by a Longhorn since 1988 with her PR of 16:09.52. She is just the fifth Horn to clock a 5K time faster than 16:10.00 in program history and joins teammate Mia Behm as the only two to accomplish the feat since 1988.
Malone looks to repeat ... Senior Chantel Malone is looking for a repeat performance from her 2010 Big 12 championship in the long jump. Malone jumped 21-0.50 (6.41m) to win last year's title. With a season-best mark of 21-0 (6.40m), the senior currently ranks eighth in the nation and fifth in the Big 12.
Longhorns Finish Second in the Nation ... The Longhorns capped off the 2011 indoor season with a second-place showing at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Texas, who finished 42nd at the indoor national meet a year ago, received second-place showings from freshman Shanay Briscoe and junior Mia Behm to boost the Horns to 38 points. A total of eight athletes earned 10 All-America honors.
