Women's Track and Field places 19 on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas Women's Track and Field team placed 19 student-athletes on the 2010 Academic All-Big 12 Teams, announced by the league office Tuesday. The Longhorns landed 16 on the First Team and earned three Second Team selections for their most honors since the inception of the Big 12.

Senior Lauren Salisbury and junior Chantel Malone highlighted the group as they received their third and second-straight First Team nods, respectively. In addition, junior Megan Vasquez was one of 25 female student-athletes in the Big 12 that posted a perfect 4.00 GPA. Senior Asia Myrland also earned her second selection to an Academic All-Big 12 team as she was named to the First Team after receiving a second team pick a year ago.

Longhorns who collected their first career First Team honors were sophomores Julie Amthor, Mia Behm, Jessica Doyle, Kim Ikegbunam, Anne Jones, Victoria Lucas, Nina Moreno, Okwukwe Okolie, Beverly Owoyele, Ginny Simon and Amanda Van Dyke and junior Kayla Marsh.

Second team selections included senior Jordyn Brown, redshirt junior Betzy Jimenez and sophomore Judy Nwosu.

Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 155 first team recipients and 29 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.

To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
