Women's Track and Field lands 15 on Academic All-Big 12 Teams

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Texas Women's Track and Field team placed 15 student-athletes on the 2011 Academic All-Big 12 Teams, announced by the league office Tuesday. The Longhorns landed 13 on the First Team and earned two Second Team selections to mark the second-straight year Texas has had at least 15 honorees.
 
Junior Julie Amthor led the group on the First Team, as she was one of 14 student-athletes to boast a perfect 4.00 GPA. Amthor, a two-time First Team selection, is joined by fellow two-time First Team honorees juniors Mia Behm, Jessica Doyle, Victoria Lucas, Okwukwe Okolie, Beverly Owoyele and senior Megan Vasquez.
 
Senior Chantel Malone earned her third-straight First Team nod while sophomores Chalonda Goodman, Natasha Masterson, Akua Sencherey, juniors Laleh Mojtabaeezamani and senior Allison Mendez picked up their first career honor.
 
Second Team selections included redshirt senior Betzy Jimenez and sophomore I.J. Ubabuike.
 
Nominated by each institution's director of student-athlete support services and the media relations offices, the women's track & field academic all-league squad consisted of 156 first team recipients and 22 student-athletes on the second team. First team members consist of those who have maintained a 3.20 or better GPA, and the second team are those who have a 3.00 to 3.19 GPA.
 
To qualify student-athletes must maintain a 3.00 GPA or higher either cumulative or the two previous semesters and must have participated in 60 percent of his/her team's scheduled contests. Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence. Senior student-athletes who have participated for a minimum of two years and meet all the criteria except percent of participation are also eligible.
