TV spot featuring Kearney receives Barbara Jordan Media Award
AUSTIN, Texas -- The Austin division of Time Warner Cable will receive the prestigious Barbara Jordan Media Award from the Texas Governor's Committee on People with Disabilities at an awards ceremony at the Four Seasons Hotel in Dallas on April 27th. The company is being honored for a television commercial that features Bev Kearney, head women's track and field coach at The University of Texas. The Barbara Jordan Media award acknowledges print and broadcast media professionals who accurately and positively report on individuals with disabilities. Kearney was injured in a life-threatening traffic accident in December of 2002 which caused paralysis and damaged her spinal cord. After three surgeries and countless rehabilitation, she has since returned to work at the university and has resumed coaching full-time. Her Texas women's track and field teams recently won the 2005 NCAA outdoor and 2006 NCAA indoor championships – the fifth and sixth NCAA crowns for the Longhorns under Kearney since 1998. The 30-second TV commercial features Kearney in everyday situations demonstrating her well-known zest for life—at the track and at home relaxing. She talks about the tools she uses to maintain her active lifestyle. The spot shows her watching sports programming on digital cable saying, "I'm a clicker. I watch three programs at once...Even when I'm just chillin', I like to keep movin'." "On behalf of the 1,100 employees of Time Warner Cable in Central Texas, we are deeply honored to receive this award," said Lidia Agraz, vice president of public affairs for Time Warner Cable–Austin. "We dedicate the award to Bev Kearney, who is truly an inspiration to us all. It's also a wonderful opportunity to reflect on the enormous contribution that Barbara Jordan made to Texas and our nation." Time Warner Cable–Austin serves more than 300,000 homes in Central Texas and employs about 1,100 Central Texans. The company is a major corporate contributor to many community non-profit organizations, and is a corporate partner with Texas Athletics. Time Warner Cable was the 2004 Greater Austin Hispanic Chamber of Commerce Corporation of the Year and the 2003 Austin Area Urban League Corporation of the Year.
