Kearney one of four judges for McDonald's Happy Meals Chefs

April 14, 2012

AUSTIN, Texas – Texas Women’s Track & Field head coach Beverly Kearney is one of four judges for the McDonald’s Happy Meals Chefs competition which runs for four more days.

Kearney joins Olympic swimmer Dara Torres and nutrition experts Dr. Keith Ayoob and Sylvia Klinger on the judging panel. The four will select the winners from video entries submitted by parents of children 8-11 years old. The entries are supposed to tell stories about cooking with wholesome ingredients and creating a fun atmosphere at the family meal time.

“The importance of nutrition should be emphasized at an early age,” said Kearney. “In some cases, health issues that impact adults, such as obesity, heart disease and diabetes, partially result from a lack of nutrition education in childhood. I am honored to work with McDonald’s as a judge for Happy Meal Chefs because as an African-American athlete and coach, I know many of these issues are more prevalent in my community, and I believe strongly that by placing a positive emphasis on children’s wellbeing, the contest will help promote healthier communities.”

The contest started on March 5 and runs through April 18. Ten selected winners will win a trip to the 2012 London Olympic Games and two will win the Happy Meal Chef Experience, an apprenticeship with McDonald’s executive chef Dan Coudreaut.
