Marshevet Hooker wins long jump to headline day three at Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- As 12,000 fans looked on during the third day of the Texas Relays, sophomore Marshevet Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) set a new stadium and meet record with a jump of 21-10 in winning the long jump. The Longhorn women posted eight regional qualifiers on Friday, April 8, while the Texas men notched five regional marks of their own led by a third-place finish from senior Zach Zeller (Flower Mount, Texas) in the 3,000-meter steeplechase.

"I thought we had a fantastic day," said Texas women's head coach Bev Kearney. "I think everyone has doubted us this year, but the good thing is, we haven't truly doubted ourselves."

Texas men's head coach Bubba Thornton was also pleased with today's action.

"We had a great day," said Thornton. "Now, we have to come back tomorrow and compete again."

Hooker's mark of 21-10 was just one-quarter inch off Nicole Devonish's school record of 21-10.25, set in 1996. She opened with a jump of 19-9.75, but took off on her second attempt for the record-breaking leap. She took one more jump, but passed on her final three attempts. This all came after the All-American had already notched the third-best qualifying time in the 100 meters with a regional-qualifying 11.44 and anchored the 4x100-meter relay team to the top qualifying time of 44.07.

"Marshevet (Hooker) adds that quality that gives your whole team confidence," added Kearney. "She makes everybody else better."

Sophomore Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) posted a regional qualifier in the discus with a personal best throw of 171-0, while freshman Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) finished in a tie for third in the Section B Pole Vault with a regional-qualifying 12-5.50.

The Longhorn women had two regional qualifiers in the 100-meter hurdles with junior Ashlee Williams (Dallas, Texas) posting the fastest time of the day, a 13.17, while classmate Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) qualified sixth in 13.56. Walker also helped the 4x100 and 4x400-meter relays post regional-qualifiers.

On the men's side, Zeller was joined by junior Jeff Cutrer (Nederland, Texas) in posting a regional qualifier in the 3,000-meter steeplechase. Cutrer finished fourth in a time of 8:59.15. Junior Mark Floreani ran unattached in the steeple and finished second with a time of 8:52.16.

The 4x1500-meter relay of juniors Joe Thorne (Chamblee, Ga.) and John Arnold (Katy, Texas), sophomore Matt Munoz (Kingwood, Texas) and freshman Erik Stanley (Spring, Texas) finished second with a time of 15:26.37.

The Longhorn men had three other regional qualifiers on the day with junior Brian Robison (Splendora, Texas) placing third in the discus (178-10), junior Ronald Hill (Walnut, Calif.) finishing seventh in the long jump (24-8.25) and the 4x100-meter relay team (40.15).

Final-day action on the track will begin at 9 a.m. (Central), with field events getting underway at the same time. For a complete schedule of events and results, visit the Texas Relays section of www.TexasSports.com.
