Women's Track and Field adds three wins on final day of Texas Relays

AUSTIN, Texas -- Texas added three victories Saturday for a meet-leading five wins to wrap up the final day of the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium. The Texas women were named as the Most Outstanding Team in the meet's university division. The Long Beach (Calif.) Wilson women's team was selected as the meet's most outstanding high school team, and Trey Hardee from the UT men's team was selected as the meet's most outstanding athlete.

Texas' 4x100-meter relay quartet of senior LaTashia Kerr (Houston, Texas), freshman Alex Anderson (Chicago, Ill.), senior Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) and junior Marshevet Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) fell just shy of breaking the school record on its way to a first-place finish. The quartet clocked 42.84 for the world's fastest time this season, falling just eight one-hundredths of a second shy of the eight-year-old school mark. UT captures the 4x100-meter relay for a second consecutive season at the Texas Relays.

Hooker added a narrow victory in the 100-meter dash, clocking 11.13 to edge LSU's Kelly Anne Baptiste, who timed at 11.14. She became the first Longhorn to win the event at the Texas Relays since LaKeisha Backus in 1999.

Walker scored her second Texas Relays 400-meter hurdle victory in as many seasons, capturing the event in a personal-best time of 54.87 to add another NCAA regional mark. Senior Sheretta Jones (Houston, Texas) placed seventh in 58.10.

Junior Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) added a NCAA regional mark in the shot put with a second-place heave of 56-9.50 (17.31m). The 4x400-meter relay squad of Jones, Anderson, Kerr and Walker took sixth in a NCAA regional-qualifying time of 3:32.57. UT added another sixth-place finish in the distance-medley relay, as senior Dee Dee Cortez (Mission, Texas), sophomore Temeka Kincy (Indianapolis, Ind.) and freshmen Janine Davis (Elizabeth, N.J.) and Larkin Geyer (Austin, Texas) clocked 11:50.12.

Sophomore Alandra Sherman (Houston, Texas) placed ninth in the 100-meter hurdles at 13.67. Sophomore Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) took 11th place in pole vault with a top clearance of 12-5.50 (3.80m).

Texas returns to action on Saturday, April 22 as it hosts its third indoor meet of the season, the Longhorn Invitational.
