Women's Track and Field opens Texas Relays with strong 5K performance
AUSTIN, Texas -- Senior Landra Stewardson (Detroit, Texas) and freshman Asia Myrland (Verona, Wisc.) finished first and second in the 5,000-meter run as the No. 12 Texas women's track and field team opened the 2007 80th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays at Mike A. Myers Track and Soccer Field on Wednesday, April 4. Stewardson's time of 17 minutes, 6.49 seconds was her fastest of the year, and marked a steady improvement of well over a minute since the start of the 2007 season. Myrland's time also showed substantial progress, as she moved from 18:31.94 at the start of the season, to tonight's 17:12.67 time. Junior Mariya Townswick (Briarcliff, Texas) started the day for the women, running the fastest time of her career in the 1,500-meter run (4:45.65). She finished in eighth-place and shaved almost seven seconds off her season-best time of 4:52.07, registered at the Bayou Classic. The second day of the Texas Relays begins tomorrow at 11 a.m. (CT) with the decathlon. The evening running session starts at 4:30 p.m. (CT) and consists of two events with multiple heats - the 400-meter hurdle preliminary races and the 4x800-meter relays.
