AUSTIN, Texas -- Hosting its first of four outdoor meets during the 2006 season, Texas collected 11 victories and 17 NCAA regional-qualifying marks Saturday at the Texas Invitational at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium. Senior Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) and junior Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) led the Longhorns with two victories apiece.
Walker claimed the 400-meter hurdles in 56.87 for a NCAA regional-qualifying mark and added another NCAA mark in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.38, tying for first place. Senior Sheretta Jones (Houston, Texas) took third in the 400-meter hurdles in 58.68, adding another NCAA regional mark. Sophomore Alandra Sherman (Houston, Texas) contributed a NCAA regional mark in the 100-meter hurdles, placing fourth in 13.57.
Carter captured the shot put with a mark of 55-1.50, topping her nearest opponent by four feet and eclipsing the NCAA regional mark by 2.5 meters. She added a first-place toss of 151-4 in the discus.
Sophomore Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) broke her own school record in the pole vault for the second consecutive week, topping 13-0.25 to eclipse her previous mark by one inch and score a NCAA regional mark.
Junior Marshevet Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) led a Longhorns 1-2-3 finish in the 200 meters, winning the event in a NCAA regional-qualifying time of 23.43. Senior LaTashia Kerr (Houston, Texas) took second, while Sherman placed third.
Sophomore Temeka Kincy led a quartet of Longhorns atop the 800 meters, winning in 2:07.26. Kincy, freshman Janine Davis (Elizabeth, N.J.) and senior Dee Dee Cortez (Mission, Texas) all registered NCAA regional marks in the event. Freshman Katara Rosby (Baton Rouge, La.) took fourth in 2:11.15.
Freshman Alexandria Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) took the 100 meters, clocking 11.39 for a NCAA regional mark, while Sherman took second in 11.85. Kerr, sophomore Jasmine Lee (Norwalk, Calif.) and junior Jerrika Chapple (Lancaster, Texas) led a 1-2-3 UT finish in the 400 meters, as Kerr and Lee registered NCAA regional marks.
Texas showed off its depth in the 4x100-meter relay, as two Longhorn quartets posted NCAA regional marks on their way to a one-two finish. Texas completed a similar feat in the 4x400-meter relay, taking first and second and posting NCAA regional marks.
Junior Landra Stewardson (Detroit, Texas) took second in the 3000 meters with a personal-best time of 10:25.52. Freshman Larkin Geyer (Austin, Texas) placed fifth in 10:32.47 and added a third-place finish in the 1500 meters. Junior Amber Reber (O'Fallon, Ill.) contributed a second-place showing in the 2000-meter steeplechase, taking second in 7:33.96. Senior Ychlindria Spears (Luling, Texas) registered the top collegiate finish in the long jump, taking second in 19-4.
Texas returns to action on Wednesday, April 5 when it kicks off the 79th Clyde Littlefield Texas Relays in Austin.
