Women's Track and Field preview: Texas Invitational
AUSTIN, Texas -- The University of Texas women's track and field squad hosts its first of four outdoor meets scheduled at UT's Mike A. Myers Stadium this season when it welcomes four teams for the Texas Invitational. The meet begins Saturday, March 25 at 11 a.m. CST with the hammer throw and concludes at approximately 5:20 p.m. with the 4x400-meter relay. Texas A&M, Texas-San Antonio, Texas State and Texas A&M-Corpus Christi will join the host Longhorns. Heat sheets will be available Friday at TexasSports.com. Admission is free for all fans. UT prepares for its second indoor meet after winning five events and posting eight NCAA regional-qualifying marks on Saturday, March 18 at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami. Freshman Alexandria Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) registered a NCAA regional-qualifying mark on her way to victory in the 400 meters, while freshman Janine Davis (Elizabeth, N.J.) took second with a NCAA regional mark. Sophomore Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) topped her own school record in the pole vault, capturing the event and registering a NCAA regional-qualifying mark. Junior Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas), fresh off of her NCAA indoor shot put victory, claimed her first outdoor shot put event of the season with a NCAA regional mark of 53-8.25. Freshman Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) collected her first career outdoor high jump victory with a clearance of 5-11.25, good for a NCAA regional mark. UT also added a NCAA regional mark in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3:39.23. Sophomore Jasmine Lee (Norwalk, Calif.) and senior LaTashia Kerr (Houston, Texas) added NCAA regional marks in the 200 meters. Texas captured 10 events at the 2005 Texas Invitational. Jerrika Chapple and Melaine Walker led UT with two victories apiece. Chapple captured the 200 meters and the 400 meters, while Walker claimed the 100- and 400-meter hurdle events.
