Women's Track and Field's Carter wins shot put at Texas Southern Relays

HOUSTON -- Sophomore Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) opened her outdoor shot put season with a victory at the Texas Southern Relays on Saturday, March 19. She finished with a throw of 51-3 to beat Houston's Tinisha Wesley by almost six feet.

"Michelle wants to throw every week to try and stay sharp," said Texas assistant coach Rose Brimmer. "She had a great indoor season in the shot put and she wanted to come out here and work on her technique. It's nice that she could get a win in the process."

Carter competed yesterday in the discus for the first time this season. She finished eighth with a throw of 118-9.50.

The Longhorn pole vaulters also competed yesterday. Freshman Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) set a new school record in the pole vault with a clearance of 12-8.25 in winning the event. Not only did she break teammate Lacey Smith's old record of 12-4, but she also notched a regional-qualifying mark in her first event of the outdoor season. Freshman Anne Phillips (Fort Worth, Texas) placed third with a clearance of 11-5.75. Sophomore Ashley Hulsey (Rocky Mount, N.C.) finished ninth in the event with a jump of 10-0, while classmate Mallory Rodgers (Hamlin, Texas) came in 10th with a leap of 9-6.25.
