MIAMI -- Fresh off of its national-title run at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships, Texas kicked off its outdoor season with five victories and eight regional-qualifying marks Saturday at the Hurricane Invitational in Miami.
Freshman Alexandria Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) led a Longhorn one-two finish in the 400 meters, clocking 53.00 for a NCAA regional mark. Freshman Janine Davis (Elizabeth, N.J.) took second in 54.18 to add another NCAA regional mark, while freshman Britney Orville (Houston, Texas) took fifth in 55.85.
Sophomore Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) extended her own school record in the pole vault, winning the event with a NCAA regional clearance of 12-11.50 and topping her previous school mark by two inches. Junior Lacey Smith (Austin, Texas) placed seventh at 10-6.
Junior Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas), the 2006 NCAA indoor shot put champion, added a NCAA regional mark with a toss of 53-8.25 in the shot put. She also placed fifth in the discus with a toss of 152-1.25. Freshman Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas), the third-place finisher in the high jump at the 2006 NCAA Indoor Championships, registered a NCAA regional mark with a first-place clearance of 5-11.25.
Texas' 4X400-meter relay quartet of senior Sheretta Jones (Houston, Texas), Anderson, senior LaTashia Kerr (Houston, Texas) and senior Melaine Walker (Kingston, Jamaica) took first with a NCAA regional time of 3:39.23. The Longhorns' 'B' relay squad of Orville, sophomore Jasmine Lee (Norwalk, Calif.), Davis and junior Jerrika Chapple (Lancaster, Texas) took second in 3:43.02.
Lee added a NCAA regional mark in the 200 meters with a time of 23.77 for third place, while Kerr took fifth in a NCAA regional-qualifying time of 23.88.
Texas returns to action next Saturday, March 25 as it hosts the Texas Invitational at Mike A. Myers Stadium on the UT campus.
