Women's Track and Field finish eighth at NCAA Indoor Championships
FAYETTEVILLE, Ark. -- The University of Texas women's track and field team scored 22 points and continued its string of five consecutive top 10 NCAA Indoor team finishes in placing eighth overall at the 2007 NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships in Fayetteville, Ark. Arizona State won the team championship with 38 points, LSU was second with 33 points while fellow Southeastern Conference teams Tennessee (30 points), Georgia (28 points) and Auburn (26 points) rounded out the top five teams. It is the first time that a Southeastern Conference team or Big 12 Conference program has not won either the men's or the women's title in the same indoor season. Leading the point scoring effort on day two (March 10) was the combined 60-meter dash finishes by All-Americans Alexandria Anderson (Chicago, Ill.) and Chauntae Bayne (Saginaw, Texas). Second-year Anderson finished in fifth-place and scored four points with a 7.32-performance, while Bayne was right on her heels in sixth-place (three points) in 7.33 seconds. Anderson returned later on in the meet to sprint the first leg of the 4x400-meter relay, handing the baton to sophomore Janine Davis (Elizabeth, N.J.). UT's 1,600-meter quartet continued to round the track as junior relay All-American Jasmine Lee (Norwalk, Calif.) exchanged with Bayne. Anchor leg Bayne scorched the track and caught Illinois' final leg Carlene Robinson on the far straightaway en route to registering the fastest time in the first heat (3:36.02) and eighth place overall (one point). Junior Ashley Laughlin (Marble Falls, Texas) finished in a tie for sixth place in the pole vault, after clearing 13-5.25 (4.10-meters). Although she tied her second highest height of the year, Laughlin did not make the scoring cut as five others tied as well and she was eliminated due to missed attempts. The Longhorns begin the outdoor season next weekend with a trip to Las Vegas for the UNLV Invitational on Saturday, March 17.
