AUSTIN, Texas -- University of Texas sophomore Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas) earned Big 12 Indoor Track and Field Athlete of the Week honors after setting a school record in the shot put with a throw of 58-6.50 at the Tyson Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 12. This is the first conference accolade of Carter's career and the first accolade for Texas this season.
Carter set a personal best and broke Eileen Vanisi's school record of 58-1.75 on her first throw of the competition (58-4.75). The throw would have easily won the competition, but Carter uncorked a throw of 58-6.50 on her final attempt to automatically-qualify for the NCAA Indoor Championships and etch her name into the Texas record books.
The meet was only the second of Carter's indoor season, but she is now preparing, along with the rest of the Longhorns, to travel to Lincoln, Neb. on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 25-26 for the Big 12 Indoor Championships.
