Women's Track and Field preview: Leonard Hilton Memorial Meet

AUSTIN, Texas -- Although the start of the 2007 spring semester at the University of Texas has been delayed two days because of unusually cold ice storms and snow, the debut of the Longhorns' women's track and field team will not be held up.

UT begins its National Champion team title defense with a trip to Houston on Friday, Jan. 19, for the Leonard Hilton Memorial Meet.

Teams entered in the scored competition are: UTSA, Grambling State, Houston, Huston-Tillotson, Jackson State, Lamar, McNeese State, Nicholls State, Rice, Sam Houston State, Southern, Texas A&M-Corpus Christi, Texas Lutheran, Texas Southern, Texas State, Tulane, and UT-Pan American.

With the first few weeks of the track season well underway, Trackwire selected Texas head coach Bev Kearney's team to finish fifth and score 28 points at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Trackwire's selections are based on potential point scorers at the national meet in March.

Three individuals -- senior Michelle Carter (Ovilla, Texas), sophomore high jumper Destinee Hooker (San Antonio, Texas) and senior transfer sprinter Chauntae Bayne (Saginaw, Texas) -- and the 4x400-meter relay were chosen to finish among the top 12 in their respective NCAA events at the indoor championships.
