Women's Track and Field debuts at No. 4

AUSTIN, Texas – The Texas Women’s Track and Field team is ranked No. 4 in the preseason USTFCCCA NCAA Division I National rankings. Besides the team rankings, UT appears in 19 individual event rankings with five different athletes ranked in the 400m led by sophomore Briana Nelson who enters the season as the No. 1 ranked runner in the event. She is joined by Angele Cooper (No. 3), Kendra Chambers (No. 11), Stacey-Ann Smith (No. 11) and Alicia Peterson (No. 33). Nelson had the fastest time in the 400m last season for the Longhorns. Sophomore Shanay Briscoe is also one of the top athletes in the country as she is rated No. 2 overall in the high jump. Briscoe became just the second freshman in Big 12 history to win the high jump at both the indoor and outdoor conference championships last season. Also ranked in the top 10 of the high jump is Victoria Lucas at No. 7. Senior Mia Behm is ranked in two distance events, including No. 6 in the 5000m and No. 31 in the 3000m. Behm enters her final season and last year placed second in the 5000m at the NCAA Indoor Championships. Texas has a great 4x400m relay team as well with the No. 4 ranking the nation. The distance medley relay is also ranked at No. 17 overall.
Also ranked for the Longhorns are Christy Udoh in the 200m (No. 18), A’Lexus Brannon in the long jump (No. 24), Nelson in the 200m (No. 25), Amanda Van Dyke in the shot put (No. 25), Natasha Masterson in the pole vault (No. 27), Cooper in the 200m (No. 29), Helen Ubabuike in the shot put (No. 29) and Allison Peter in the 60m (No. 34). The Longhorns begin the 2012 indoor season this Friday in Houston with the UH Leonard Hilton Memorial. |
